Client Challenge

A renewable energy developer needed help with engineering and permitting for a utility interconnect substation on its 126 MW wind project. The developer built a new 115 kV substation for the regional electric utility, connecting the wind farm to the transmission grid.

How We Helped

SGC Power was selected through a competitive bidding process and provided the civil, electrical, and protection and control designs for the substation. The team prepared design packages at 30%, 75%, and construction-ready stages, then delivered the final record drawings. SGC Power also handled all required studies, protection settings, equipment specifications, helped with permitting, and supported construction.

The 115 kV substation has circuit breakers, motor-operated switches, gang-operated disconnect switches, grounding switches, voltage transformers, and surge arresters. A control shelter contains the AC/DC systems and the protection and control equipment. The station is set up for a breaker-and-a-half scheme but is currently operating as a ring bus, allowing for future expansion.

Powerful Results

The project was completed on time and under budget, with no major issues in the final design. The client has since hired SGC Power for more renewable projects, including the collection system, collector substation, and transmission line for this wind farm.
