126 MW Wind Farm Project: End-to-End Interconnection Design

Client Challenge
A renewable energy developer required engineering and permitting support to commission a 126 MW wind facility, including a collection system, a new collector interconnection substation, and transmission line upgrades. SGC Power had previously designed the interconnect substation, enabling the team to deliver a coordinated, end-to-end interconnection solution.
How We Helped
SGC Power was selected through a competitive bid to design the collection system, collector interconnection substation, and transmission line, and to provide permitting support. Our team produced 30% and 75% issued-for-construction drawings, followed by final record drawings at project close, and delivered substation civil, electrical, and protection and control designs. We also completed support for studies, protection settings, arc-flash analysis, equipment specifications, and construction support.
The collection system linked 30 Vestas V150 turbines, each rated at 4.2 MW, to the collector substation through five 34.5 kV feeder circuits using both underground and overhead cabling. The 115/34.5/13.8 kV collector substation featured a 100/133/166 MVA three-winding transformer and a dedicated control shelter for AC/DC systems and protection and control equipment.
The project integrated a 45 MVAR GE synchronous condenser on the tertiary winding of the main transformer to provide dynamic reactive support and meet utility interconnection requirements. SGC Power incorporated the condenser into the substation's protection and control scheme, marking the team's second successful synchronous condenser integration and demonstrating expanding expertise in dynamic reactive compensation for renewable interconnections.
